The reception and storage of whole plants and grain. The micro-organisms and pests of stored grain

Abstract

Rapid and efficient reception, processing and storage of plant materials is essential to prevent deterioration and losses. Grain for seed or malting must retain a high level of germinative power and so standards for its storage are more demanding than for feed grain. More care is needed for longer periods of storage. The provision of good storage conditions is expensive. The most economic storage conditions are often those which just succeed in preserving the plant material for its chosen purpose. When using marginally ‘safe’ conditions the risk of sudden deterioration is high.
