Abstract
The normal stages of morphological development in the domestic fowl embryo have been described in detail by Hamburger & Hamilton (1951), Hamilton (1952) and Romanoff (1960). Although referred to in Appendix 1 they will not be reviewed here. The present chapter and also Appendix 2 deal with development at a grosser level and indicate what the embryo is like at different stages, how it changes in posture and in its relationship with the other shell contents (particularly the yolk and albumen) and also, how its activity changes in the course of development. Changes of the same kind have been indicated by Kaltofen (1971) in his work on the duck embryo.
