Abstract

THE technique of sampling fine particulate materials, of measuring the particle size, and of defining the proportionate size make-up of the material has of recent years been studied very carefully in the U.S.A. by Wentworth, Krumbein, and others, and a wealth of useful detail will be found in a book by Krumbein and Pettijohn1. An excellent bibliography on the subject of the measurement of small particles by sifting, elutriation, and other methods is given in a paper by Heywood.2
