Abstract
The origins of primary hypertension are controversial. Nevertheless, there is general agreement on the determinants of adult blood pressure beginning to operate very early in life. The great importance of heredity as one major determinant is universally accepted. The relative importance of other determinants is in dispute, but most will agree that body mass, dietary electrolyte intake, and psycho-social stress factors are among the principal contenders.
