Abstract

The first and foremost goal of this study was to clarify the meaning of the concept of “centralization.” This concept has been widely used in many social science disciplines, at many different levels of analysis, and as both an independent and dependent variable for quite some time. It is our contention, however, that the concept has been defined in several different ways and with such little rigor that it has been of limited utility in creating cumulative knowledge about the causes and consequences of the distribution of power in complex social systems.
