Novel Curing Agents for Epoxy Resins

  • Chapter
Developments in Reinforced Plastics—4

Summary

A review of the literature for curing agents and accelerators for epoxy resins covering the years 1966 to 1982 reveals that many new compounds and compositions have been disclosed in this time period. Most of the innovations are related to novel diamines, polyamines and amine-epoxy adducts. Novel approaches to introduce latency in epoxy resin compositions using aminimides, organic and metallic salts and complexes have been disclosed. Novel approaches in epoxy cure, utilising cationic complex salts and organometallic compounds directed toward fast moulding processes, have also been developed since 1966. However, most innovations are related to curing agents and compositions which affect the cure and properties of films, coatings and adhesives. Very few curing agents have been developed for advanced composite applications. Several novel curing agents and curing agent compositions have been commercialised, but these do not nearly approach the number reported in the literature.
