Abstract
Sir Francis Teale, in whose memory this lecture is held, was a bacteriologist with wide-ranging interests. In taking as my theme ‘Fetal growth control’ I would be flattered to imagine that his curiosity as a biologist would be aroused were he with us today, for I shall endeavour in this review to focus on mechanisms that may be of relevance to the general control of cellular growth.
