Abstract

Thyroid disease may occur at any age and is an important cause of chronic morbidity. The clinical presentation, especially in childhood, is often insidious and atypical presentations surprise even the most experienced clinicians. However, precise diagnostic tests are widely available and treatment is generally straightforward and fully effective. It is therefore necessary to maintain a high index of suspicion for thyroid disease. This brief review of acquired thyroid disease in childhood will not be comprehensive but will attempt to highlight some aspects of practical importance in diagnosis and treatment which seem to the author currently to need emphasis.
