Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to review some aspects of normal and abnormal pancreatic endocrine function in the newborn period. In order to understand fully the importance of the endocrine pancreas at this time of life and the metabolic derangements caused by abnormal function, it is necessary to review first the control of blood glucose homeostasis in the fetus and neonate.
