Abstract

In 1921, Banting and Best isolated insulin and in due course their efforts were rewarded by the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the ‘cure’ for diabetes1. Over the ensuing decades insulin manufacturers developed various forms of insulin with delayed absorption characteristics which allowed a reduction in the number of daily injections2,3. In 1955, Sanger completed his work on the amino acid sequence of porcine insulin, work which was again distinguished by the award of the Nobel Prize4. In 1968, Steiner performed the Chromatographic separation of insulin crystals5, with the identification of a range of impurities in insulin preparations which led to the development of monocomponent insulins and most recently purified preparations of human insulin6.
