Cholecystolithiasis in a Danish community: design of a cross-sectional and longitudinal survey

  • Chapter
Epidemiology and Prevention of Gallstone Disease

Abstract

An age- and sex-stratified random sample of 4808 persons is obtained in 11 municipalities. The gallbladder is evaluated by real-time ultrasonography, the body mass index is registered, and fasting serum cholesterol measured. A questionnaire regarding gastrointestinal symptoms, diseases, life habits, weight history, socioeconomic factors, and gynaecological and obstetric history, is completed. After 5 years the procedure is repeated in the same cohort. The morbidity and mortality of the cohort is followed through central registers.
