  • Chapter
Epidemiology and Prevention of Gallstone Disease

Abstract

In the United States and Europe most gallstone disease is due to cholesterol stones, for which the reported risk factors include family history of gallstones, obesity, severe bile acid malabsorption, clofibrate and oestrogen therapy, femaleness, and possibly pregnancy and diabetes1. In this report we review some previous publications concerning the two factors obesity and diabetes, and present additional data from the study of the Pima Indian population in Arizona, USA.
