Abstract
Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, thoracic surgery has made rapid progress. Before liberation, there were only a few hospitals in which pulmonary and esophageal surgery was performed. Surgical specialties of thoracic surgery was not established until 1956. A special hospital for thoracic diseases was first set up in Beijing and later in Shanghai. Since then not only have thoracic diseases been treated effectively, but also postgraduate training for special personnel and related research work have been carried out in various hospitals and medical colleges throughout the country. The development of surgical techniques has been surprisingly rapid.1
