Abstract
The odontogenic tumours arise from the dental tissues either during the period of active development of the teeth or after tooth formation has been completed. In the former case the tumours arise in the developing tissues and they are in this sense embryonic tumours. In the latter, they develop from the remnants of the odontogenic tissues in the jaws after the teeth have been fully formed. Odontogenic tumours are therefore often seen in children and adolescents, but they also occur in adults of all age groups since the odontogenic tissue remnants, or rests, persist throughout life. Moreover, since most of the odontogenic tumours are benign and grow relatively slowly, often with few symptoms, they may have been present for a long time before being detected.
