Abstract

Antibodies are not the only reagents which can be used to probe the surface of cells. Bioactive peptides, hormones and growth factors also bind to the cell surface. In this latter case the molecules which bind by definition recognize functionally important cell surface molecules. Genetic analysis has been used to map the genes controlling growth factor receptors and to elucidate the mechanism by which growth factors mediate these biological effects. In Chapter 5 Nobuyoshi Shimizu describes several novel approaches to studying receptors for growth factors. Particularly interesting is the coupling of toxic molecules to growth factors to select cell variants which either do not bind growth factors or fail to correctly process the internalized growth factors.
