Abstract

Early studies of the ionosphere were based on data obtained by radio-sounding from the ground, i.e., mainly on the values of the critical frequency of the main layers of the ionosphere. The ideas about the nature of the processes taking place at ionospheric altitudes were incomplete, and could not always explain the complex and variegated behavior of the ionosphere.
