Abstract
It was way back in 1948, at the Seventh General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union held in Zürich, that we met for the first time. You were a young astronomer of great promise, Member of the IAU, and I was a baby astronomer helping out in the local organization. In many ways it was a memorable General Assembly; in particular it was marvellous to see how astronomers from all over the world were happy to meet each other again, after the very difficult epoch the world had gone through since the preceding IAU General Assembly held in Stockholm in 1938. World War II had greatly disturbed and hampered relations and communications between the astronomical communities around the globe. Now, old relations were renewed, new ones were established, and all astronomers were looking forward to peaceful and fruitful international cooperation.
