Abstract
Each year, new microprocessor families appear in the electronic products marketplace. The greater ability of these devices open additional areas of applications to the microprocessor designer. The applications in which microprocessors are being used fall into two major groups: control and problem solving. In a control application a microprocessor generates signals which are used by another machine. In a problem solving application a microprocessor generates signals which are used by a human being. As it turns out, these two major groups of applications place different requirements on both, the microprocessor architecture and the microprocessor structure.
