Abstract
An overview of the experiences and perspectives of the river basin development process and related strategies in the valley of the Tisza river, a main tributary of the Danube is presented, covering the period from the 19th to 21st century. Come characters of the region are described and the river basin development and its future perspectives are analyzed. It is pointed out that there is a very strong connection between the application of the basin-wide strategy and the stage of river basin development. During the natural phase of development there is no need to apply the basin-wide strategy. But on higher levels of the development the complexity of water and land resources management makes it necessary to apply the basin-wide strategy for planning, decision making and implementation of water projects. The environmentally sound management of land and water resources needs also a basinwide river basin strategy. The multi-purpose character of the river basin strategy is also emphasized. Finally a number of recommendations including environmental considerations are summarized.
