Abstract
The Hawkesbury river basin in SE Australia is mainly composed of forest and agricultural land. The river provides water supply for the neighbouring Sydney area and the basin — 26% of which is national park — is very popular as recreation areas for the metropolitan population. By the year 2000, the population is expected to have doubled, and the metropolitan area to extend further into the basin, causing conflicting water interests. The author, involved in the planning as a Swedish consultant, discusses the water quality problems to be foreseen, mainly from the aspect of eutrophication, and presents the nutrient removal options available.
