Abstract
This workshop covers a field IFLA has a lively professional interest in, since it is deeply convinced of its influence on the functioning of libraries as intermediaries in the provision of information. This interest is shown by the circumstance that IFLA is represented here and has asked me to say a few words in this opening session. It is also shown more in practice in a joint statement of a group of European publishers (members of GELC), and a group of European librarians (members of IFLA) — all of them in their personel capacity — as the outcome of a series of meetings.
