Abstract
The Postgraduate School of Librarianship was established in the University of Sheffield in 1963 and took its first students in 1964. Even then, however, there was a specialism in industrial librarianship and information work which subsequently developed into a separate Master’s programme in information science. In 1973 this area of the School’s work was further developed with the addition of a programme for a Master’s degree in information science in the social sciences. This programme was launched with financial assistance from the Nuffield Foundation for the first three years.
