Abstract
Recent geological mapping and allied Rb-Sr and U-Pb isotopic work have revealed the existence of a circa 1650 Ma orogenic event within the Labrador component of the Grenville Structural Province which is known as the Labradorian Orogeny. The area affected by this event, the Labrador Orogen, is a belt composed largely of high-grade, metasedimentary, sillimanite and/or kyanite gneiss ± hypersthene, garnet, cordierite and sapphirine, which is intruded by a linear, posttectonic granitoid batholith. The Labrador Orogen is juxtaposed against rocks of the slightly older Lower Proterozoic orogen of the Churchill Province (circa 1800 Ma), but has been almost entirely remetamorphosed, together with the southern margin of the Churchill Province, during the Grenvillian Orogeny (circa 1000 Ma). Metamorphism during the Grenvillian event varied from greenschist to granulite facies, but had remarkably little effect on Labradorian Rb-Sr and U-Pb systems throughout much of the area.
Regional correlations are made with other circa 1650 Ma areas of deformation,both within and outside of the Grenville Province.
