Abstract
The Proterozoic period dates from the end of the Archean at about 2500 Ma to the Cambrian at 570 Ma. Thus it covers about 2 Ga of Earth history and is the longest geological period with a record on Earth. Only the Archean covers a similar timespan but as yet we have no record of surface rocks older than 4.2 Ga.
