Early History of Cosmic Ray Studies

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 118))

Abstract

My first fleeting contact with cosmic ray research in Manchester was made early in 1939 when, together with a few other undergraduate physics students, I was taken on a tour of the research laboratories by J.M. Nuttall, a senior member of the teaching staff who in an earlier epoch had worked on radioactivity as a colleague of Rutherford and together with Geiger had been joint discoverer of the well known relationship between the range of an α-particle and the half life of its parent nucleus.
