Abstract
This article is a recollection of work with which I was directly involved during the very short period in which the identification of what is now the muon was established. I came to the ‘Magnet House’ in Malet Street, London, in September 1936 and continued there until January 1938, when the whole apparatus was dismantled and removed to the Physical Laboratories at Manchester, where P.M.S. Blackett, for whom I was working as a research assistant, had been appointed Head of the Department two or three months earlier. While our own work, which is the basis of this article, concerns only data collected at the Magnet House, there was an inevitable lag in the measurement of plates and the interpretation of the material, and it would be artificial and misleading to exclude material which was not analysed until we were working in Manchester.
