Abstract
Infrared spectroscopy of molecules in regions of star formation holds the greatest potential for probing the high excitation gas adjacent to protostars and the shock fronts generated as a result of star formation activity. The current observational data at λ = 2 — 300 µm are reviewed and methods for analysis are developed. Future studies which will become possible with spectrometers in space are briefly discussed.
