Abstract

The observation of the 3.08 μm ice band towards several stars in Taurus is shown to require an efficient surface chemistry leading to the formation of hydrides. The evaporation of molecular mantles from warm grains may be the origin of the very high abundances of NH3 in some localized regions, for example IRC2 in Orion. Evidence will be presented that shocks may periodically return molecular mantle material to the gas phase. This material may be returned partly as molecules, and partly dissociated into atoms.
