Laboratory Studies of Ion Reactions with Atomic Hydrogen

Abstract

Using a Selected Ion Flow Drift Tube, the following reactions have been investigated in the regime from thermal (300 K) to ~ 0.1 eV center of mass kinetic energy, KE:

$${O^ + } + H \to {H^ + } + O;C{O^ + } + H \to {H^ + } + CO;C{H^ + } + H \to {C^ + } + {H_2}$$

and CH4 + + H2 ⇄ CH5 + + H. For the isotope exchange reaction DCO+ + H → HCO+ + D a value k = 1.5 × 10-11 cm3 sec-1 has been obtained at KE ⋍ 0.06 eV.
