Chemical Composition and Molecular Abundances of Molecular Clouds

  • Chapter
Molecular Astrophysics

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 157))

Abstract

The study of the chemical composition of the interstellar medium (ISM) (i.e. essentially the determination of the abundance of its trace elements which altogether represent only 1 percent in mass) is one fundamental topic of astrophysics. The trace element abundance not only controls the IS gas chemistry, but also the cooling of this gas and its degree of ionization (hence indirectly the evolution of the IS clouds, the rate of star formation, and the IMF), as well as the chemical composition of the stars (hence their evolution).
