Abstract
The effect of pulsation on the outer layers of cool, luminous giant stars has been studied. Models typical of Mira variables and pulsating IRC and OH/IR sources are considered. Pulsation is assumed to be in the fundamental mode (first overtone pulsation in Mira variables was considered in an earlier paper — Wood 1979). The pulsation can not by itself produce significant mass loss rates. Radiation pressure acting on grains in the atmosphere of the static red giant models is also incapable of producing significant mass loss rates. Pulsation enhances the mass loss rate due to a grain-driven stellar wind by a factor of ~106 but, in the present models, the resultant mass loss rates are still small compared to observed values.
