Laboratory Studies of Ion Irradiations of Water, Sulfur Dioxide, and Methane Ices

Abstract

We review the results obtained at AT&T Bell Laboratories for the erosion and modification of water, sulfur dioxide, and methane ices by energetic (∼10–2000 keV) ions. Such ions are common constituents of the solar wind and planetary magnetospheres and can interact with the ices on the surfaces of the Jovian and Saturnian satellites, in comets, and in interplanetary grains. The particle irradiations produce high erosion rates and significant chemical modifications of the ices. Of particular importance in the outer solar system, at Uranus and beyond, is the alteration of methane ice — or mixtures of methane ice and water — in which polymer residues are produced by ion irradiation.
