Abstract

This chapter is concerned to see what a theory of adverbs might look like in the ‘situation semantics’ developed by Jon Barwise and John Perry. I shall base my discussion on the account developed in their book Situations and Attitudes [3], and, unless otherwise indicated, any reference to situation semantics will be from that work. Further developments are promised of course but I hope that what I say will be addressed to fundamental questions which will not be seriously affected by later refinements to the theory.
