The Measurement of Critical Values of Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) and J on Parent Steels and Weldments for Use in Fracture Assessments

  • Conference paper

Abstract

Following a brief description of the role of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics for fitness for purpose assessments of ferritic materials, current fracture toughness testing standards are reviewed.

Consideration is then given to the measurement of CTOD values for subsequent use in fracture assessments. Particular aspects such as specimen geometry, notch positioning and special test methods for weldments are highlighted.

Estimation procedures for J and CTOD at the initiation of ductile tearing following ASTM and British Standard methods are presented.

Finally the relevance of initiation, maximum load toughness and crack growth resistance curves for the assessment of materials exhibiting fully ductile behaviour is discussed.
