Abstract
A simple method, called EnJ, to denote the engineering use of J for the assessment of defects, is described and then applied to example problems. The method is broadly comparable to the well known COD and R-6 methods but, contrary to the recent EPRI method, retains one diagram for all estimates of J. Three cases taken from the previous Workshops are solved for purposes of comparison, one a pressure vessel in the near LEFM regime already trated by R-6, one a butt weld with high residual stresses already treated by COD and finally an estimate of maximum tearing load in a compact tension test piece already treated by the EPRI method. The results provide an alternative treatment that in each case seems as satisfactory as the original solutions.
