Abstract
The COD method for assessment of the significance of defects in weldments, BS:PD6493, is described and then applied to a simple problem of a non-stress relieved butt weld in a two-dimensional configuration. The sequence of analysis is first outlined for those who may wish to attempt their own solution. The example is solved both by following the standard method and by an alternative application of the principles in which certain simplifications of PD6493 are not made. The problem is then extended to deeper cracks and to combined tension and bending of a three-dimensional defect, both with and without residual stress, in order to illustrate their dominant role in such problems, and also the judgements that may have to be made outside the terms of the standard procedures.
