Workshop 2: The EPRI* Method for Ductile Fracture Analysis

Abstract

The EPRI method for ductile fracture analysis, based on the J-integral, is an engineering approach which permits fracture evaluations of flawed structures to be carried out, without finite element calculations, by engineers who are not specialists in fracture mechanics or inelastic analysis. The method is exposed and then applied to fracture mechanics tests on large welded plates. Some difficulties are encountered and a good modelling of the tests cannot be obtained; nevertheless the EPRI method gives rather conservative results for maximum load and stable crack growth.
