Fast Neutron Dosimetry by Means of the Scraping Sampling Method

Reactor Dosimetry

Abstract

During the shut-down period of a nuclear plant, scraping samples could be taken from the surface of structural materials. From the measured 93m-Nb (16 y) and 54-Mn (315 d) activities the fast neutron fluence and flux density could be determined. Furthermore, by means of the 93m-Nb to 54-Mn activity ratio the calculated neutron spectrum could be adjusted.

From given steel samples the 835 keV gamma activity of 54-Mn was measured directly. In order to measure the low energy (16.6 keV) x-ray activity of 93m-Nb, it was necessary to separate the niobium from the steel. The yield of the chemical separation (ionic precipitation by HAP) was higher than 95%.

The scraping sampling method is useful for measuring the azimuthal neutron flux distribution on the PV inner wall and for determining experimentally the lead factor of the material samples located in the surveillance capsule.
