Abstract

Recent analyses of experiments with low energy polarized 6Li snd 7Li beams are reviewed. It is emphasized that elastic scattering polarization observables show a much stronger sensitivity to details of the projectile structure than do unpolarized cross-sections. The way that the measured vector and tensor analysing powers for Li scattering from a range of heavier targets can be understood in terms of simple cluster models for the ground and low lying excited states of the projectiles is described.

Although the simple cluster picture can explain the main features of the Li elastic scattering data systematic deviations do exist which it is difficult to understand in this way. The evidence for a novel type of spin-dependence in heavy-ion scattering is discussed. The quite different physics involved in the spin-dependence of light and heavy-ion interactions is emphasised.

Recent work on (d,α) reactions with polarized deuterons is also reviewed and discussed from the point of view of nuclear structure information.
