Abstract
The paper provides an introduction to the use of optical techniques in signal processing operations. The characteristics of optical sources, modulators, fibres and detectors are first summarised. The basic operations of optical signal processing are then outlined and a comparison made with other processing techniques, both analogue and digital. It is concluded that optical signal processing can offer significant advantages where high time-bandwidth products are involved and data rates are high, such as at the output of many sensor systems.
