Abstract

Accretion discs are believed to be important in a wide variety of astronomical objects, ranging from quasars to cataclysmic variables. Attempts to construct their theory from first principles founder on our ignorance of the processes of angular momentum transport. Phenomenological theories and empirical constraints, although model dependent, are useful. Empirical evidence and constraints are found from the study of systems as diverse as Her X-1, SS433, and the SU.UMa stars.
