Abstract

The identification (Charleset al., 1979) of the hard X-ray source 2AO526-328 with a previously unknown star of the cataclysmic type, having a spectrum almost identical to those of AM Her and EF Eri but lacking detectable circular polarisation, marked the start of an exciting new development 1n studies of cataclysmic binary systems. Motch (l98l) found two photometrfoperiodsin TV Col (2AO526-328): 5h11 m. 5 found 4 d. 042. The latter turned out to be a beat period with the spectroscopic period of 5h29 m. 2 (Hutchingset all98l), and suggested, by analogy with models developed for DO Her, that TV Col contains an asynchronously rotating degenerate star from which a beam of high energy radiation emerges, illuminating gas distributed within the binary system.
