Abstract
Hourly measurements of the evaporation from Thetford Forest in East Anglia, were made using the energy budget-Bowen ratio method for most of the daylight hours of 26 predominantly dry days in July and August of 1974, 75 and 76. To demonstrate the response of the transpiration to environmental conditions, the hourly values of the surface conductance were calculated using the rearranged form of the Penman-Monteith equation with the aerodynamic conductance set to 167 mm/s. The surface conductance was shown to be dependent on specific humidity deficit, solar radiation and soil moisture deficit when these environmental variables had values of less than 11 g/kg, less than 400 W/m2 and greater than 65 mm respectively. The present results were compared to the few similar studies that have appeared in the literature.
