Abstract
The flow of drilling fluid through the kelly hose, kelly, drillpipe and collars may be considered to be flow through a series of circular pipes. Laminar flow in pipes can be analyzed quite readily for most of the fluid models, and a considerable amount of experimental work has been performed on turbulent flow of non-Newtonian fluids in pipes. If the drilling fluid conforms closely to the fluid model in use, the nature of flow in the drillstring can be calculated with confidence.
