Part of the book series: Physics and Chemistry of Materials with Low-Dimensional Structures ((PCMB,volume 4))

Abstract

The purpose of this text is to discuss the thermodynamical properties of TTF-TCNQ, this being a prototype of organic conductors with two families of conducting chains. It belongs to an even wider class of linear chain compounds which are currently attracting a lot of attention by their unusual properties. A recent paper [1] (henceforth Paper I) reviewed the thermodynamical properties of conducting trichalcogenides and gave a short historical introduction to the physics of quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1d) materials. In particular, its introduction places TTF-TCNQ among other quasi-1d materials. Therefore, we shall not repeat the same discussion here but rather emphasize that the main idea of the two joint papers is an attempt at synthesizing experiment and theory, which is focused on a given class of materials. Such approach has the advantage that it rationalizes the experimental situation in a specific way but the obvious price to pay is that some definite, though more or less justified options are then required. While we shall try to point out carefully the remaining alternatives, it should be kept constantly in mind that some definite choices have been made here. Like an earlier similar attempt [2], this paper thus represents rather a view than a review of TTF-TCNQ, intention being to give a broad basis for further discussions and improvements in the understanding of this interesting class of materials. Such approach has been chosen because TTF-TCNQ and related materials have been thoroughly reviewed lately [3,4].
