Recent Seismicity in Hainaut — Scaling Laws from the Seismological Stations in Belgium and Luxemburg

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 144))

Abstract

A relationship is established between the local magnitude ML determined with the data from seismological stations in Belgium and Grand-Duchy of Luxemburg and the seismic moment Mo derived from the study of the coda waves recorded at the station of Dourbes. This was done in studying 17 earthquakes having occurred in Hainaut during the period 1965–1971. Assuming circular sources, relationships between source parameters and local magnitude were obtained. This provides us with means for estimating source parameters using ML determinations and fault size evaluations. Two examples are discussed: the earthquakes of 15 december 1965 (12h 7 m) and 28 march 1967 (15h 49m).
