Macroseismic Observations of the Liège Earthquake on November 8, 1983, in West Germany

Seismic Activity in Western Europe

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 144))

Abstract

The damaging Liège earthquake on November 8, 1983, at 0:49 GMT with epicentral intensity VII MSK and local magnitude 5.1 has been felt in West Germany as far as Detmold (270 km), Marburg (230 km) and Darmstadt (240 km). The Rhine valley between Koblenz and Duisburg and the Lower Rhine Embayment were shaken with intensity IV. In the Belgium-Germany border region near Aachen (45 km east of the epicenter) a maximum intensity IV–V has been observed. No significant case of structural damage was reported from the West German territory. From the comparison of recorded ground motion with macroseismic intensity observed at the sites of the seismograph stations it is evident that intensity IV of the MSK-scale can be correlated with peak values of ground velocity in the order of 1 mm/sec.
