Abstract

As in the case of open-chain ethers discussed in the preceding paper, the first absorption band of cyclic ethers reached by the 185 nm light emitted by the low-pressure Hg arc must be attributed to an n → Rydberg transition [1, 2]. In open-chain ethers, the major process following excitation at 185 nm is the scission of a C-O bond (Reaction 1) [3, 4]:
