Abstract
Some reactions of unsaturated organic substrates lead to the formation of new C—C bonds. Examples are the dimerization of ethylene to 1-butene, the formation of 1,4-hexadiene by the addition of ethylene to 1,4-butadiene, the polymerization of norbornene and the alkylation of ketones. These and related reactions are catalysed by many compounds of transition metals, including rhodium or iridium. The insertion of an alkene into an M—C bond plays a key role in many of the reaction pathways, and this topic has been reviewed [707].
