Abstract
The physics of circumsolar space started to become a powerful branch of science after the launch of the first Soviet artificial Earth-satellite in 1957. Although various physical phenomena in this field had been studied long before that time, the amount and quality of the data obtained from observations and measurements on the Earth could not be compared with those obtained on spacecraft. Hence, the period of time prior to the beginning of direct observations in space may be naturally called the pre-history of cosmic physics.
